St. Cloud, MN – For those that thought former Husky defenseman, Tyler Anderson hung up the skates think again. He’ll be donning the gold and brown colors of the University of Manitoba Bison (Winnipeg, MB) this season. But, wait a minute, what happened to medical school?

Anderson, an NCHC All-Academic Honoree, and NCHC Scholar-Athlete Honoree all four seasons while at SCSU had his sights set on medical school following the Huskies run to the NCAA championship game his senior season. However, things don’t always fall perfectly in place. Anderson told the Winnipeg Free Press in a September 20th story that he was not one of the 110 applicants out of 250 interviewed selected to gain admission into the U of M Medical School. Instead, for the time being, he has enrolled in a two-year Master’s program in the University of Manitoba’s Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

“I was disappointed, especially because I still do feel like I will be a great doctor when I do get in,” Anderson told the Winnipeg Free Press. “It’s just a very competitive field and that’s just the way it goes. A lot of people don’t get in on their first try. I just have to try again.”

Meanwhile, as a fifth-year transfer, he is immediately eligible to join the Bison hockey team that competes in the Canada West Hockey League along with schools like Mount Royal, University of Alberta, University of Saskatchewan, and Lethbridge University – all schools the SCSU Huskies have scheduled exhibition games against.

The Bison have an exhibition game with the University of Regina Cougars on Friday, September 24th, and a series of exhibitions through October 9th before they begin the Canada West schedule vs the Calgary Dinos on October 15th. The team is top-heavy with former Western Hockey League players.

“It’s gonna be a ton of fun,” Anderson told the Press. “I know coming to the locker room I’ve either played with or played against I’d say 85 percent of the players on the team. It’ll be great.”

For those that are interested in watching Anderson compete for the Bison, the contest with Calgary can be seen online here.
