St. Cloud, MN – The only constant is change. It’s been an offseason of changes for St. Cloud State athletics. Two weeks ago, Nick Oliver departed to become the head coach of the Fargo Force USHL team. This past Monday (May 16th) Athletic Director Heather Weems was introduced as the Commissioner of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference to replace Josh Fenton. On Tuesday, May 17th Weems announced the hiring of Quincy Henderson as the new SCSU Basketball coach. On Thursday, May 19th, Brian Idalski was introduced as the new SCSU women’s hockey coach.

On Friday, May 20th, current SCSU hockey Director of Operations and Video Coordinator RJ Enga was promoted to the SCSU men’s hockey assistant coach position to replace the departed Nick Oliver. Logistically, this was an easy move sliding Enga to a different desk in the hockey office.

“We are so fortunate to have a highly qualified coach of R.J.’s stature already on our staff and we know he’ll make the transition to our bench seamlessly,” said Brett Larson. “His experience speaks for itself, as he has made coaching stops in the NAHL, USHL, national level, and in our very own conference at Colorado College. Having him on our staff this past season was a blessing, as he was crucial to our operation and immediately earned the trust of our student-athletes and staff. We are excited for the future and grateful to have R.J. on our bench moving forward.”

“I am extremely excited for the opportunity to continue to be on the coaching staff in my new role as an assistant coach,” said Enga. “I am truly honored and humbled to be part of such an amazing program and university! St. Cloud State has such a rich history of success and I will do everything that I can to continue this tradition. To be able to work closely with Coach Larson and Coach Shyiak is an incredible opportunity. The players, staff, and community have all made it a very welcoming place to be and I can’t wait to get to work!”

For St. Cloud State University hockey, it was a no-brainer to elevate a current staff member who has an outstanding resume as a player and coach.

The 50-year-old Enga played two seasons at Culver Academy before playing four seasons of collegiate hockey at Colorado College where he posted 142 points in 158 games. Post-Colorado College, Enga played three seasons in the East Coast Hockey League, five seasons in the West Coast Hockey League and one season in Germany.

He began his coaching career in 2009 as an assistant coach for the Topeka Roadrunners of the NAHL and then two seasons as an assistant for the Chicago Steel of the USHL. He returned to his alma mater in 2014 where he remained as an assistant coach until the end of the 2020-21 season.

He was hired as the Director of Hockey Operations and Video Coordinator in 2021. Enga also spent several games behind the bench as an assistant coach while SCSU head coach Brett Larson was in Beijing for the 2022 Olympic games. Familiar with the current SCSU squad and its current recruits, Enga will be able to hit the ground running as its new assistant coach.

This creates an opening for a new Director of Hockey Operations and Video Coordinator for SCSU men’s hockey.
