St Cloud, MN – The St. John’s University Johnnies scored twice in the first 2:33 of the contest and persevered a Augsburg comeback to hand the Auggies their first defeat of the season by a 4-2 score at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Thursday, February 25th.

The undermanned Auggies entered the game with 15 skaters and ended with 13 in a very physical MIAC contest that kept the trainers busy. The Auggies fielded a full roster of defensemen but only six forwards in a game in which they  seemingly got stronger as the game progressed.

The MIAC which has been affected by COVID like all the hockey conferences commenced play on January 29th under a strict protocol without playoffs or spectators. SJU entered the game with a 3-2-0 record while Augsburg was 4-0-0.

They added another 1:19 later after a penalty to Augsburg’s Gavin Holland for holding at 2:29. It took just 4 seconds for Bemidji native Jack Johnson (Wieber/Moore) to net his third goal of the season for a early two-goal lead by the Johnnies.

Augsburg responded with a power play goal of their own after Jack Johnson was whistled for interference at 6:52 of the second period.  First-year forward Logan Kons (Reichenbacher/Koss) added his second goal of the season at 8:37 to draw the Auggies to within a goal. He capitalized on a rebound to place the puck past SJU goaltender Mac Berglove.

Augsburg weathered two consecutive penalties in the second half of period two but yielded a goal quickly to start period three to fall behind by two goals. Just 28 seconds into period three sophomore Auggie Moore capitalized on a Augsburg turnover in their end of the ice for his unassisted third goal of the year.

However, the resilient Auggies, skating undermanned converted at 8:52 after a boarding call to SJU’s Cole Souto with Grant Reichenbacher’s second goal of the season assisted by Austin Koss’s second assist of the contest. This certainly made things interesting until SJU’s Jack Johnson added his second goal of the game at  15:23 to put the game out of reach at 4-2.
