St. Cloud, MN – Since the 2012-13 hockey season, the St. Cloud State University Huskies have had a Finnish player on their roster each season. That trend will continue into the immediate future with the recent verbal commitment of speedy, left-shooting forward Veeti Miettinen and incoming SCSU freshman forward Jami Krannila. The 5’9″ 160 native of Espoo, Finland recently skated with the U20 Blues in the Jr. A SM-Liiga League where it appears he’ll log another season before joining the Huskies. He’s also built quite a resume in International play for Finland since 2016 having participated on the U16 to U20 teams including the World Junior Championships in 2019 and the World Under 17 Championships in 2017. In all, in international play, Miettinen has compiled 15 goals and 21 assists for 36 points in 56 games. Last season in the SM-Liiga U20 league, he produced 27 goals and 34 assists for 61 points in 48 games – impressive as he was one of the younger players in the league. Miettinen will turn 18 in September.
His progress over the past season has not gone unnoticed as he’s consistently been ranked as one of top 30 Europeans players for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Current projections have him being drafted anywhere from the 30th to the 50th pick. No doubt, he’ll ascend even higher after another season with the Espoo Blues.
Marco Bombino who evaluates Finland-based players for McKeens Hockey told me “he’s a small, speedy winger with good offensive skill set. He has always been a point producer in the juniors but improved his overall game last season and became a more complete player. (His) Style of play should fit the NCAA game well.” He further describes Miettinen as a “strong skater with agility, speed and very good acceleration. The physical side of the game is the biggest challenge for him as he lacked strength and length to win one-on-one battles.”
As mentioned, Miettinen will skate another season with the Espoo Blues U20 team and it is expected he’ll join the Huskies for the 2020-21 season. Miettinen will join another former SM-Liiga player, Jami Krannila on the SCSU roster. Krannila recently wrapped up a championship season with the Sioux Falls Stampede and will skate for the Huskies in 2019-20.
NCAA rules do not allow the coaches to comment on this player at this time.
