St. Cloud, MN – The Aberdeen Wings recently concluded their 2018-19 season winning the Robertson Cup, signifying the championship of the North American Hockey League. One of the key players for the Wings was forward Thomas Rocco, a 19 year-old forward who lists Midlothian, VA as his home town. On June 1, the 5’9″ 170 pound left-shooting forward announced via twitter that he has committed to play hockey at St. Cloud State University. Rocco announced “Extremely proud to announce my commitment to play hockey and further my education at St. Cloud State University! I want to thank my family, coaches, and teammates for supporting me throughout this journey. Looking forward to the next four years!”
Rocco, who is a product of the Philadelphia Junior Flyers program also played one season for the Richmond Generals of the USP3HL in 2016-17 and PAL Junior Islanders of the NCDC in 2017-18 before joining Aberdeen for the 2018-19 season. He had a productive season for the wings producing 13 goals and adding 29 assists for 42 points in 56 regular season games and 9 points in 12 playoff games en route to the NAHL Championship.
In their official release, the Wings Head Coach Scott Langer noted “Thomas is a special young man with an abundance of character and heart. He was an absolute game changer on this years Robertson Cup Championship club. His relentless work ethic will allow him to be highly successful at the next level. We’re proud of his accomplishments and excited to see his continued growth.”
Along with this Rocco announced “I want to thank the community of Aberdeen, the coaching staff, Odde Family, all the fans and my teammates for making my experience in Aberdeen a great one. I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity than the one I was given. I’m extremely excited to be given the opportunity to play for a great program in St. Cloud State University and I can’t wait to get things going. Thanks again to everyone who has made this possible.”
Neutral Zone, a prominent amateur scouting service described Rocco as having a ” High compete level and can play in key situations. Dependable and consistent. He used his legs and body well to protect the puck and keep possession. Heady forward, always put the puck in good areas, whether tape to tape pass or just a chip to space. Was good on special teams.”
Rocco will join former Aberdeen Wings players Kevin Fitzgerald and Will Hammer on the roster of the Huskies. Rocco also becomes the second player from the state of Virginia to join the SCSU program along with former Husky Garrett Roe who played for SCSU from 2007 to 2011.
Rocco will join the Huskies for the 2019-20 season.
