St.Cloud, MN- The St. Cloud State Huskies added some needed depth at the forward position with the commitment of forward Chase Brand. The 20 year old native of Nevis, MN announced via Twitter on May 8 “Excited to announce I will now be attending St. Cloud State University to play DI college hockey and further my education! Can’t wait to get started!” The 5’10” 160 pound left-shooting forward had previously committed to Miami of the NCHC in February of 2019.
Brand played his high school hockey at Park Rapids, MN and then split time between Brookings of the NAHL and Sioux Falls of the USHL in 2016-17. The bulk of his time was with Brookings where he posted 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points in 57 games. In 2017-18 he skated in 29 games for Brookings with 6 goals and 13 assists for 19 points. He also had 12 games with Omaha of the USHL posting one goal. In 2018-19 with the Madison Capitals he had his break out season with 17 goals and 37 assists for 54 points. Coach Garrett Suter saw something in him commenting ” Chase was one of those guys that was borderline for others teams but we had our eye on him all along.” Concerning his improved production Brand commented “I think the reason I’ve done well this first year is because coach Suter gave me a great opportunity to play big minutes and I took advantage of that and progressed throughout the year.”
Amateur scouting service Neutral Zone noted ” Great motor, very effective on the penalty kill, strong active stick play, excellent speed that was tough to match. Shows strong ability in creating plays.”
In Brand, the Huskies get an experienced, older player who should be able to step in and provide quality minutes in 2019-20. Brand joins four other forwards for the upcoming season in Jami Krannila (Sioux Falls | USHL), Zach Okabe (Grande Prairie Storm | AJHL), Kyler Kupka (Camrose Kodiaks | AJHL) and Henry Enebak (Carleton Place Canadiens | CCHL) .
Brand’s sister McKenna played hockey for four years at Northeastern University in Massachusetts.
