St. Cloud, MN – The St. Cloud State University connection to the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships continues with the announcement by USA Hockey of the final team roster on December 23rd. Junior, Ryan Poehling of SCSU and SCSU alumn Mike Hastings will both be representing the USA in this years tournament. Poehling will be participating in his second straight world championship. The native of Lakeville, MN is currently a SCSU junior and is second in team points with 17. He has participated in several international tournaments for Team USA including the WJC in 2018 in Buffalo ( 1G, 2A ), 2017 Under 18 Men’s World Championship in Slovakia (3G, 2A) and the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial in the Czech Republic ( 4G, 2A ).
Hastings is a 1993 graduate of SCSU and played for the Huskies from 1986 to 1988. He is currently in his sixth season as head coach for the MSU Mavericks of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. He has an overall record of 151-72-19 for MSU including 3 regular season WCHA titles, 2 WCHA Tournament championships and 4 NCAA tournament appearances. This is Hastings first appearance as head coach but his fifth appearance behind the bench for Team USA in international competition.
The is the third consecutive year with an SCSU Alumn as head coach with former SCSU coach Bob Motzko serving in that capacity in the 2017 and 2018 tournaments.
The USA starts their drive for the Gold Medal with their first contest vs Slovakia on Wednesday, December 26th at the Save-On-Foods-Memorial Centre in Victoria, BC, Puck drop is scheduled for 5:30 PM CT.
