Boston, MA – To the SCSU hockey fans in attendance, the “Let’s Go Huskies” chant which became more prominent in the second period at historic Matthews Arena probably seemed oddly out-of-place. However, the style of play of the two teams with the same nickname was very similar and led to a highly competitive and entertaining game on Saturday, October 27 in Boston. The SCSU Huskies forged a 2-0 lead early in the second period and it appeared they were on their way to their sixth win of the season. The Northeastern Huskies had other designs for the outcome in front of their home crowd. Outshooting SCSU by a 15-10 margin in the second period, they scored a late period goal and leveraged that momentum into the third scoring two more times en-route to a 3-2 comeback win over the #2 ranked Huskies. With a shake-up in a lineup missing senior Robby Jackson, SCSU seemed out of sync at times and the legs appeared somewhat weary in the second period. But they regained their energy in the third, outshot Northeastern 12-6 but couldn’t beat sophomore goaltender Cayden Primeau in this  battle of netminders. In the end, it was a Hockey East win on this night with the hope by this writer that these two squads meet once again later in the season.

SCSU extended their streak of consecutive goals without being scored upon to 145 minutes and 23 seconds when Blake Lizotte (Newell | Schuldt) netted his second goal of the early season at 5:12 of period one. Lizotte fired a nasty wrist shot that beat NU’s Primeau for a 1-0 SCSU lead. The visiting Huskies caught a break a little over a minute later when a shot from the point by Jeremy Davies hit Smith and rolled up his torso deflecting off the cross-bar. A major penalty to SCSU’s Jack Ahcan for boarding at 12:33 stunted the SCSU offensive momentum but they were able to withstand the extended Northeastern advantage and rode out the balance of the period with a 1-0 lead. The “home” Huskies had a clear advantage in SOG in period one outshooting SCSU 11-5.

Jack Ahcan (Perbix | Brodzinski) redeemed himself for the untimely major penalty in period one with his first goal of the season at 15:11 of the second period. Nick Perbix fired a shot from the middle of the top of the circles that rebounded all the way back to Jack Ahcan who wristed it past Primeau from the left circle for a two-goal SCSU advantage. Northeastern got the game break they needed at 18:22 of the second period with Eric Williams first goal of the season. A nice entry play by NU yielded a drop pass by Bobby Hampton to Williams whose shot from the left circle deflected off Jeff Smith’s glove and over his right shoulder to narrow the lead to one goal. Again, Northeastern outshot SCSU 15-10 for the period and clearly had the momentum after the goal by Ahcan.

An early third period goal at 1:38  had the home Huskies back on track and finally had the game knotted at 2-2. SCSU’s Smith stopped an initial shot but couldn’t contain the puck and it was netted by Biagio Lerario for his first goal of the season. Northeastern then completed their game long comeback with the game-winner by Grant Jozefek at 13:35. Jozefek beat Smith from the right circle with a shot that deflected off his shoulder and over him for their first lead of the contest. Despite continued pressure by the Huskies and Smith pulled for an extra attacker SCSU was unable to convert the equalizer giving them their first loss of the season at the hands of the #12 ranked Northeastern Huskies.

Northeastern coach Jim Madigan summed things up in his post-game conference saying ” I just thought we stuck with it. We knew what they did to that school over at Chestnut Hill so that grabbed our attention. We liked the way we approached the second and third period. I thought we deserved to win.”

Stars of the Game: #1 Eric Williams (Northeastern) #2 Cayden Primeau (Northeastern) #3 Jeff Smith (SCSU)
