In preparation for the game, the Huskies will have a scrimmage in the AM on Saturday as they are finally able to begin full-time practices. They’ll have a workout in preparation for Sunday’s game including some emphasis on special teams play. Believe me, there are no lines etched in stone for the start of the season but to feed the SCSU fans appetite for some very preliminary info on the forward lines they’ve been skating the following:
Brodzinski | R Poehling | Jackson
Hentges | Lizotte | Newell
Benson | Walker | Wahlin
N Poehling | Walker | J Poehling
Hammer | Miller | Ilvonen
On defense, again, it’s very preliminary but the top three defenseman are set in Schuldt, Lizotte and Ahcan and then roll the dice. Newcomer, Perbix has looked extremely sharp in practice and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him up there with Ahcan. They’ve also been impressed with rookies Bushy and Meier. Anderson and Jaycox are now veterans and I’m sure they’ll be given every opportunity to maintain their regular role. Clark Kuster is a senior and like all seniors have a way of stepping up their game to squeeze out some ice time. However, it’s going to be a battle at this position and there will be a lot of rotation to start the season.
Both the exhibition with Mount Royal (they can play the full roster) and the season opening non-conference series with the Alaska Nanooks will allow for a great deal of experimentation and what you see in Alaska may not hold true when they return home to play Northern Michigan on October 19 and 20.
MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS
The Cougars are members of the Canada West University Athletic Association (CWUAA) and a member of Canadian University Sport (CIS). League members include of British Columbia, Calgary, Alberta, Saskatechewan, Manitoba, Regina and Lethbridge many of which the Huskies have skated against in exhibitions in the past.
The Cougars are currently 3-2-0 with a sweep of Regina, a split with Calgary and a loss to Alberta. The head coach of Regina is Bert Gilling, a former UMD Bulldog player. The Cougars primarily recruit from the western Canadian Junior leagues including a number who have aged out from the Western Hockey League (WHL). Also, of interest is their roster includes two former NCAA players – Luke Simpson who skated with St. Scholastica (Duluth, MN) of the NCHA in 2014-15 and Chris Gerrie who played 31 games for Michigan Tech University in 2016-17.
Another interesting story is Keegan Iverson from St. Louis Park, MN who will red shirt this season. Iverson, 22 played two years with the Breck School in MN. The 6’2″ 220 pound forward spent some time with the US National U17 team, five seasons with the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL and was a third round draft choice of the New York Rangers in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He also had 11 games with the Ontario Reign of the AHL and 35 games with the Manchester Monarchs of the ECHL.
The Cougars will have a contest with Minnesota State Mankato on Saturday, October 6 prior to their Sunday faceoff with the Huskies.
Players to keep an eye on for Mount Royal include:
Connon Rankin, 2016-17 Canada West scoring leader, Goaltender Riley Morris, Colton Kroeker, Colton Bobyk, Tyson Helgeson and Bradan Arnold.
This will be an older, experienced opponent which will present an interesting and competitive challenge for the Huskies.
