St. Cloud, MN – If you take a look at the recently posted 2018-19 SCSU Men’s Hockey Roster you’ll note the addition of Spencer Meier to the already deep crew of defensemen on this years squad. Meier, who was a recruit of former coach Bob Motzko, reaffirmed his commitment to SCSU after meeting with the current SCSU coaching staff and completed his National Letter of Intent for the 2018-19 season. The Sartell, MN native made great strides after one season with the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League and was instrumental in the team’s Clark Cup Championship this past season.
Individually, the 6′ 4″ 190 pound Meier had a solid season both on the offensive and defensive end of the rink completing the season tied for the USHL lead in power play assists with 22 and 7th among USHL defenseman in plus/minus at +18. He was also tied for 7th among defenseman with 34 points in 59 games. Fargo Force coach Cary Eades told the St. Cloud Times in May “He can shoot the puck, has good vision, great hockey sense and is very coachable. He’s a very well-rounded defenseman. He’s not just a guy who plays offense. He can defend.”
Meier will join a solid group of first-year defensemen in 2018-19 including Elk River’s Nick Perbix, a 6’4″ 193 pound Tampa Bay Lightning draftee who played for Omaha of the USHL this past season and Brendan Bushy, a 6’2″ 214 pound Thief River Falls, MN native who was a two-year veteran of the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
The Huskies will enter the 2018-19 season with ten defenseman including seniors Jimmy Schuldt, Jon Lizotte and Mika Ilvonen, Juniors Clark Kuster and Jack Ahcan and sophomores Luke Jaycox and Tyler Anderson. It’s quite likely the team could experiment with Mika Ilvonen at forward during the season.
