St. Cloud, MN – The rumblings have been there for a while that SCSU assistant coach Garrett Raboin would follow former SCSU coach Bob Motzko to the Minnesota Gophers coaching staff. Although not formally anounced by the U of MN he has been listed in the Gopher directory of employees. That  put into place the final pieces of both the St. Cloud State University and Minnesota Gophers coaching staffs for 2018-19. Raboin, who just completed his 6th season as an SCSU assistant coach will join Scott Bell to complete the University of Minnesota coaching staff. Raboin was an outstanding blueliner for the Huskies from 2006-2010 and was a three-year captain of the squad. Effective on both ends of the ice, Raboin finished his career with 83 points placing him fourth all-time in career scoring for a Husky defenseman. The Detroit Lakes, MN native was recently named to the Detroit Lakes High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Raboins position on the SCSU coaching staff will be replaced by former Husky forward Nick Oliver as announced by SCSU Athletic Director Heather Weems on May 3rd. Oliver, was most recently the Assistant Coach and Director of Scouting for the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League. Oliver just completed his third season with the Stampede. A Roseau Minnesota native, Oliver was a four-year player for the Huskies and a captain during the 2013-14 season. Oliver was instrumental in guiding the team to its first Frozen Four appearance in 2014 and was a member of the 2013 WCHA McNaughton Cup Championship team and 2014 NCHC Penrose Cup Championship. Oliver also captained his Roseau High School team in 2009 and was a member of the 2007 state high school championship Roseau squad. Oliver was a fourth round selection of the Nashville Predators of the NHL.

“We couldn’t be more excited to add Nick Oliver to our staff,” first year SCSU head men’s hockey coach Brett Larson said. “Nick is one of the most respected captains to ever play at SCSU. He’s a person of strong character and work ethic, his passion and enthusiasm for this program will be obvious to the current team and future recruits. He’s done a great job for the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL and has done the right things to prepare for this opportunity.”

“I am humbled and honored for the opportunity to be returning to St. Cloud State,” Oliver said. “I have a deep passion for this University, Huskies hockey and all of the people surrounding the program. I am eager to learn and work with Coach Larson and Coach (Mike) Gibbons and all of our players. This is a special program and I am excited to be coming back to a place I consider home.”

Oliver will join Mike Gibbons as an assistant under recently announced SCSU head coach Brett Larson. Recently, Mike Gibbons announced he would be returning to the Huskies in 2018-19 as an assistant coach.

It may take some time but assume we will see Garrett back in the cardinal and black in the future. His roots are too deep with the Huskies.
