Omaha, NE – Jake Wahlin scored his third goal of the weekend including the game-winner and David Hrenak earned a shutout stopping 40 shots on goal as the Huskies defeated Omaha 5-0 for a sweep of the weekend series. The win combined with a loss by Western Michigan to North Dakota placed the Huskies all alone in first place in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference by a single point over the Fighting Hawks. That sets up a crucial series for SCSU as they host North Dakota at the HBNHC next weekend. The Huskies sweep this weekend improves their conference record to 6-2-0 and overall record to 11-2-0.
The two squads skated to a scoreless first period of play with several good scoring opportunities by both teams as the Mavericks outshot SCSU 12-8. David Hrenak made a huge save at the doorstep with eight minutes to play in the period and Jon Lizotte had a point-blank shot turned aside at the buzzer. Both teams went scoreless on the man-advantage with Omaha 0/2 and the Huskies 0/1.
The Huskies finally got on the board first with Jake Wahlin’s third goal of the weekend at 4:20 of period two. Two minutes later the Huskies added to their lead with a power play goal by Blake Winiecki (Schuldt | Eyssimont) his fourth of the season. Eyssimont fed Schuldt at the point who directed a sneaky shot towards the goal that was tipped by Winiecki over Weninger for a two-goal lead. Omaha again outshot the Huskies 17 to 15 and SCSU was 1/2 on the man-advantage in the period.
Period three was all SCSU as the Huskies appeared to have worn out the Mavericks who were constantly being pestered by the aggressive forecheck of the Huskies and stunted by Hrenak on every opportunity. Jon Lizotte ( Wahlin | B Lizotte) added his second goal of the season at 4:15. Jake Wahlin added another point to his weekend totals as he fed the puck to Lizotte from behind the net and Lizotte one-timed it past Weninger for a 3-0 lead. The Huskies upped their lead to four goals with an unassisted short-handed goal by Jack Poehling. Poehling entered the Omaha zone and skated the puck to the top of the circles beating a screened Weninger for his sixth goal of the year. The Huskies finished off their scoring with a power play goal by Robby Jackson (Eyssimont | Schuldt) at 16:13. MIkey Eyssimont made a nice cross-ice pass to Jackson who ripped a wrist shot from the top of the left circle past Weninger for the 5-0 final.
Omaha outshot the Huskies 40-33 with David Hrenak stopping all 40 to earn his fourth win of the season.
