Epic Comeback by SCSU Derails the Nanooks 6-3

St. Cloud, MN – The #4/6 ranked SCSU Huskies overcame a dismal start to Friday’s game vs the visiting Alaska Nanooks to rattle off six consecutive goals and earn a 6-3 win at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Junior captain and defenseman Jimmy Schuldt once again provided the offensive spark with two power play goals and sophomore forward Nick Poehling added two of his own in the impressive comeback for the Huskies.

The Huskies found themselves behind the eight ball early as the Nanooks scored three times in the first 8:29 of the game for a commanding 3-0 lead. Kylar Hope gave Alaska the early lead burying a rebound past an out of position Jeff Smith for a 1-0 advantage. Slightly over two minutes later, Ryker Lee took advantage of a SCSU turnover beating Smith stick side for a 2-0 Nanook lead. Alaska added another at 8:29 taking advantage of some weak defensive zone play by the Huskies. Troy Van Teetering scored off his own rebound at the goalmouth for a 3-0 lead. The Huskies finally answered at 14:18 with a goal by Nick Poehling (Wahlin | Peterson).  Jake Wahlin fed Poehling off the back wall and he beat Alaska’s Anton Martinsson for his first goal of the early season. Despite outshooting Alaska 16-11 in period one, the Huskies found themselves  down by a 3-1 score.

The Huskies came out with more resolve in period two but were unable to score until 14:09 on the power play. Mika Ilvonen slid a pass to Jimmy Schuldt (Ilvonen | Jackson) who one-timed a rocket that  beat Martinsson top shelf off the cross-bar to narrow the score to 3-2. SCSU once again outshot the Nanooks 11-8 in period two.

The game turned heavily in the favor of the Huskies in period three as they rattled off four goals to bury the Nanooks by a 6-3 final. First, Nick Poehling (Ahcan | Peterson) backhanded a shot through traffic from outside the goalmouth at 5:09 to tie the game at 3-3. Next, Jimmy Schuldt (Jackson | R Poehling) scored again on the power play at 8:44. Robby Jackson slid a pass to Schuldt who  one-timed a shot past Martinsson for a 4-3 lead. Robby Jackson (Ahcan | Borgen) extended the lead to two goals at 16:36 on a wrist shot that deflected off the cross-bar and behind Martinsson. Jack Poehling (Ryan Poehling | Schuldt) sealed the win  with an empty net goal at 19:59 fr the 6-3 final.

SCSU outshot the Nanooks 42-25 for the game. Jeff Smith stopped 22 of 25 shots on goal overcoming an early shaky start by the Huskies for his second win of the season. The Nanook’s Anton Martinsson turned aside 36 of 41 shots yielding five goals in the loss. The Huskies were 2 for 5 on the man-advantage while Alaska was unable to convert on their two power play opportunities.

The Huskies had a number of players with multiple points including Jimmy Schuldt (2-1-3), Robby Jackson ( 1-2-3), Jack Ahcan (0-2-2), Ryan Poehling (0-2-2), Judd Peterson (0-2-2) and Nick Poehling (2-0-2).
