St. Cloud, MN – Granted, there’s a few things to work on but whenever you throw 53 shots on goal, get 6 points out of first-year players and a shutout on a combined effort of three goaltenders you have to be pleased.  The Huskies were not hospitable hosts burying the puck eight times in a 8-0 exhibition win over the University of Regina on Saturday, September 30. And, oh by the way, not a bad effort when you figure just nine hours earlier the Huskies were skating in their first formal practice of the season.

First-year forward Blake Lizotte put on quite a show with a hat trick and some impressive puck control scoring in each period in the blow-out. Fellow first-year forward Easton Brodzinski also had an impressive coming out party with a goal and two assists for a three-point night. First-year players, Kevin Fitzgerald, Will Hammer, Lucas Jaycox, Tyler Anderson and David Hrenak all logged ample ice time and were equally impressive in their college hockey debut.

The Huskies scored three times in period one to take a lead they never relinquished. Jack Poehling scored the game-winning goal on the first goal of the game at 4:23. It didn’t take Easton Brodzinski long to get on the scoreboard getting the lone assist on the play. A mere 34 seconds later Blake Lizotte (Winiecki | N Poehling) scored his first of the evening for a 2-0 SCSU lead. Robby Jackson topped things off in period one with a power play goal off a nice wrister from the point with assists from Blake Winiecki and Nick Poehling for a 3-0 lead. In a dominating period, SCSU outshot Regina 24-4.

The Huskies scored early and often in period two with Patrick Newell starting things off with a goal at 4:45. Newell (R Poehling | Schuldt) buried a one-timer from the slot for a 4-0 SCSU lead. Another power play goal by senior Blake Winiecki with assists to Newell and Jackson gave the Huskies a five goal lead. Brodzinski then added another on a nice play at 14:52. A nice feed from Jack Poehling sent Brodzinski in on goal all alone and he beat the Cougars Herringer in tight with a backhander. Blake Lizotte finished the scoring in period two with a goal at 15:15 with assists from Blake Winiecki and Nick Poehling. Lizotte took a pass from Winiecki, torched the Regina defenseman and beat Herringer top shelf with a wrist shot for his second of the game. The Huskies led 7-0 at the end of two out shooting the Cougars 13-11 in the period.

The Huskies added one more goal in period three and again it was LIzotte to compete the hat trick with assists from Easton Brodzinski and Jack Poehling. Brodzinski made a nice feed to Lizotte who completed the play for his third point of the evening.

All three goaltenders played a period of hockey with Jeff Smith turning aside 4 shots on goal in period one, David Hrenak stopping all 11 shots in period two and David Zevnik stopping all 10 shots he faced in period three. SCSU outshot the Cougars 53 to 25 with Regina netminder Michael Herringer stopping 45 of 53 shots. The huskies were 2 for 6 on the man-advantage while the Cougars were stopped on all four of their opportunities.

The Huskies will have a much different contest on their hands next weekend facing in-state rival and WCHA favorite Minnesota State University Mankato on the road Saturday.
