The SCSU coaching staff continued loading their future player base with local players with the commitment of Sartell-St.Stephen High School’s Spencer Meier. The 6’3″ 186 pound defenseman announced via twitter on Spetember 20th that he has committed to the Huskies. He posted ” Proud to announce my commitment to play hockey at St. Cloud State University. Thank you to everyone who has helped along the way.” The is the third local player to commit to SCSU in the past week following commitments by Annandale’s Ben Ward and St. Cloud Cathedral’s Nate Warner.

The right shooting Meier has been a fixture in Sartell’s varsity lineup for 4 years  compiling 37 goals and 113 assists for 150 points in 136 career games. The rangy defenseman scored a number of these goals with his quick wrist shot from the point. Former coach Ryan Hacker described to the St. Cloud Times ” He puts more work than anybody else I’ve ever had here. He’s not just shooting pucks off the ice. He’s working on stuff that’s not fun to do. He wants to be good and is willing to do what it takes.” Over the past two seasons Meier’s play has accelerated to the point where he began to receive substantial notice from both Junior hockey and collegiate teams.

Amateur scouting service Neutral Zone recently noted ” Continues to grow and is adjusting to his body. Has some keen offensive instincts . Gets around the ice well…Has potential to play at the next level.” This is a player that should still be considered a project but certainly has excellent top side potential as he continues his hockey in the USHL.

Meier was selected by the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League  in 2015 and by Fargo in the Phase 2 USHL Draft in 2017. Meier is currently rostered with the Fargo Force where he will play his hockey in 2017-18.

Meier’s father Kevin played baseball at St. Cloud State University.
