Kalamazoo, MI – The SCSU Huskies dominance of the Western Michigan Broncos continued on the road Friday with a 3-0 shut out at Lawson Ice Rink in Kalamazoo, MI. The win continued a streak of seven straight wins over WMU and handed the #13/16 Broncos their first defeat on home ice this season. The win improved the Huskies NCHC conference record to 3-4-0 and placed them in a tie for third place with Omaha and Western Michigan. SCSU’s overall record now stands at 7-6-0.

It only took the Huskies 48 seconds to get on the board in the first period via a goal by Mikey Eyssimont (Winiecki | Borgen) his 7th of the season for a 1-0 SCSU lead. Will Borgen dished the puck to Blake Winiecki who fed Eyssimont who was behind the goal line who then jammed the puck between the post and the goaltender for the first goal of the game. The Broncos outshot the Huskies 9-8 in period one and failed on the only man-advantage of the period.

Period two turned out to be a defensive struggle with neither team scoring despite four penalties being whistled in the period including three on the Huskies. With three power play opportunities the Broncos outshot SCSU 11-6 in the period but both goaltenders held firm and turned aside all 17 shots. The Broncos missed a golden opportunity in the period when Wade Allison was sprung lose all alone on Driscoll but he partially fanned on his shot and Driscoll made the save.

With the Huskies hanging on to a one-goal lead for the majority of the third period, they finally salted away the win with a goal by Blake Winiecki (Nevalainen | Eyssimont) at 15:56 of the period. Nevalainen slid a pass at the goalmouth to Winiecki who tapped it past Collin Olson for his 7th goal of the season and a 2-0 SCSU lead. Robbie Jackson finished off the SCSU scoring with an empty net goal at 17:22 off a generous assist by Judd Peterson who could have buried it himself. SCSU outshot the Broncos 11-6 in the third period.

Zach Driscoll had a solid night in goal turning aside all 26 WMU shots and picking up his first shutout at SCSU. With the win, Driscoll’s record improves to 6-4-0. WMU’s Collin Olson stopped 22 of 24 shots on goal in the loss. The Broncos outshot the Huskies 26-25 for the contest and neither team had success on the power play with SCSU 0 for 1 and WMU 0 for 5.

The Huskies complete this road series with the Broncos at 6:00 PM CT on Saturday.
