St.Cloud, MN – First-year defenseman Jack Ahcan scored his first collegiate goal and had a three-point game as the Huskies rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Alabama-Huntsville 5-2 for a sweep of the non-conference weekend series in St. Cloud. This was the Huskies fourth consecutive non-conference win and second sweep in as many weeks to improve their record to 4-2-0.

The Chargers got on the scoreboard at 13:41 of period one on a turnover by the Huskies just inside the UAH zone. Josh Kestner (unassisted) captured an errant pass by the Huskies and turned it into a breakaway the other way beating SCSU goaltender Zach Driscoll glove side with a backhand forehand  move for a 1-0 lead. It was the lone goal of a period in which SCSU outshot UAH 10-5, had an advantage on faceoffs of 14-6 and required the Chargers to block 10 SCSU shots.

But, the “comeback kids” once again rallied from an early deficit to score four straight goals in period two and salt the game away. Patrick Newell (unassisted) tied the game 2:07 into the second period picking the pocket of Josh Kestner in the SCSU defensive zone and getting a breakaway of his own beating Jordan Uhleski with a wrist shot to his stick side to tie the score at 1-1.  Blake Winiecki (Papa | Ahcan) added another SCSU goal at 11:05 snaring a drop pass from Ryan Papa and beating Uhleski with a wrist shot top shelf glove side from the top of the left circle. Ahcan (Borgen | Tedesco)  then scored the eventual game-winning goal at 13:23 with his first collegiate goal. Tedesco fed Borgen who made a DE to DE pass to Ahcan who ripped a shot past the blocker side of Uhleski for a 3-1 lead. Ryan Poehling (Ahcan | Eyssimont) added a power play goal at 19:37 for the Huskies fourth tally of the period. Ahcan slid a pass to Poehling who was trolling the right slot and he redirected the pass into the goal for a commanding 4-1 SCSU lead. In another period controlled by the Huskies, they outshot the Chargers 10-3.

The Chargers added a short-handed goal at 10:02 of the third period off a UAH odd man rush. Cam Knight (unassisted) attempted to feed the puck towards the net but it hit a back checking Jake Wahlin whose momentum drove the puck  past Zach Driscoll to narrow the SCSU lead to 4-2. But, the Huskies answered back less than four minutes later on a goal by  Judd Peterson (Borgen | Schuldt) at 13:41. Peterson carried the puck into the UAH zone then hit the brakes and shot from the top of the left circle. The puck was deflected on it’s way towards the goal getting past Uhleski for the Huskies fifth goal.

SCSU outshot the Chargers 29 to 12 for the game. UAH’s Jordan Uhleski stopped 24/29 SCSU shots on goal while Zach Driscoll stopped 10/12 Charger SOG. The Chargers were unsuccessful in four man-advantage opportunities and SCSU converted one of six attempts. Jack Ahcan led the Huskies offense with the game-winning goal and and two assists in the contest. Will Borgen also picked up two assists in the game.

The Huskies commence NCHC conference play next weekend at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center with two-game series with in-state rival UMD.
