Mankato, MN – The #14 ranked MSU Mankato Mavericks snapped a seven game losing streak to the #7 ranked Huskies with a solid 4-1 win on Friday, October 14 at the Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato, MN. The win was the first against SCSU since the 2011-12 season and improved the Mavericks early season record to 3-0-0.

The Mavericks got on the board early with a goal by Michael Huntebrinker (Lewis | Tuomie)  at 3:28 of period one. Defenseman, Clint Lewis made a nice goalmouth pass to Huntebrinker who was there to backhand the puck past SCSU starter Jeff Smith for a 1-0 lead. MSU outshot the HUskies 8-5 in the first period.

The Mavericks extended their lead to 2-0 at 1:46 of period two on a power play goal by C J Franklin (Michaelis | McClure). Michaelis threaded a pass to Franklin from behind the SCSU goal and Franklin one-timed it past Smith for a two-goal lead. Mankato added another at 9:04 of the second by Brad McClure ( Michaelis | Franklin). Michaelis fed McClure with a pass between the dots and McClure roofed it glove side past Smith for a 3-0 Minnesota State lead. However, SCSU made things interesting at 19:42 of the period on the first collegiate goal by first-year forward Jake Wahlin (Peterson). Peterson aggressively drove to the net slapping the puck while falling forward that was stopped by MSU goaltender Cole Huggins but Wahlin was there to bury a loose puck that was sitting in the goalmouth. MSU outshot the Huskies once again in period two by a 10-7 margin.

The Mavericks scored the lone goal of period three at 13:57 to salt away the game. Max Coatta (Nelson | Lewis) scored his first goal of the season for a 4-1 Maverick lead. Coatta took a shot from the right circle that beat Smith low for the final goal of the game. In a much better period by the Huskies, SCSU outshot the Mavericks 12-6.

Both teams placed 24 shots on goal in the contest with the Mavericks Cole Huggins stopping 23 of 24 SOG while the Huskies Jeff Smith turned aside 20 of 24 SOG. In a game of few penalties, Mankato was 1/1 on the man advantage while SCSU was 0/2.

The two squads return for a rematch at the Verizon Wireless Center on Saturday at 7:05 PM CT.
