St. Cloud, MN – It wasn’t pretty at times but the Huskies accomplished what they needed to do as they cruised past the University of Regina Cougars 6-2 in exhibition play at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Sunday, October 2nd. The coaching staff played practically the entire roster and rotated all three goaltenders in the contest.
The Huskies struck quickly in the first period on a goal by Patrick Newell (Jackson | Winiecki) a mere 43 seconds into the contest. Jackson made a nifty backhand pass off the right boards to Newell who slid the puck under Regina goaltender Dawson MacAuley for a 1-0 lead. The Huskies added another at 4:25 on a rebound goal by Ryan Papa (Lizotte). Defenseman John Lizotte threw the puck on goal from the left circle and Papa crashed the net to bury the rebound for a 2-0 SCSU lead. However, the Cougars responded with a goal of their own at 8:07 as Isaac Schacher beat SCSU starter Jeff Smith with a wrist shot from the left circle for a 2-1 game. SCSU added another before periods end on the power play as Mikey Eyssimont (Newell Schuldt) scored one of his patented goals from the backdoor to extend the lead to 3-1. Jimmy Schuldt directed the puck on net and Patrick Newell slid the rebound to Eyssimont who was waiting for the backdoor opportunity. The Huskies outshot the Cougars 14-4 in period one.
A power play goal by Regina at 1:37 of period two again made it a one-goal game at 3-2. A shot from the left wall was initially stopped by David Zednik but the rebound was buried by the Cougar’s JJ Coleshaw. SCSU’s Judd Peterson (Benson | Jackson) added another for the Huskies at 12:33 of period two. Benson made a nice pass to Peterson off a rush into the Regina zone and Peterson beat Mitch Kilgore with a wrist shot from the left circle glove side for a 4-2 lead. The Huskies were outshot 9-6 in period two.
SCSU added two more goals in the final period. First, Robby Jackson (Newell | Borgen) picked up his third point of the evening off a nice goalmouth pass from Patrick Newell. Jackson snapped off a shot that beat Kilgore top shelf from between the dots for a 5-2 SCSU lead. Daniel Tedesco (Benson | Lizotte) finished the scoring for the Huskies at 7:43. Benson slid a pass across the slot to Tedesco who misfired on his shot but still beat Kilgore for the 6-2 final. SCSU outshot the Cougars 10-4 in period three.
Robby Jackson and Patrick Newell each added a goal and two assists in the contest while Jon Lizzotte and Jacob Brenson pitched in with two assists. All three rostered SCSU goaltenders played a period with Jeff Smith stopping 3 of 4 shots in the first, David Zednik 8 of 9 shots in the second and Zach Driscoll all four shots he faced in the third. The Cougars Dawson MacAuley turned aside 13 of 16 shots and Mitch Kilgore stopped 11 of 14 SCSU shots as the Huskies outshot Regina 30-17.
The Huskies now have a week off before returning to non-conference action on October 14/15 vs in-state rival MSU-Mankato.
