Maybe it was the strong second half of the 2015-16 season or maybe it was the pipeline of success the LA Kings have found in SCSU players. Regardless, in his third year of draft eligibility, sophomore forward Mikey Eyssimont was selected in the 5th round as the 142nd pick by the Kings in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Eyssimont was the second SCSU player selected in the 2016 draft following Friday’s first-round selection of first-year defenseman, Dennis Cholowski by the Detroit Red Wings.

After a slow start to the 2015-16 season, the 5’11” 175 pound left-handed Eyssimont become one of the team’s most reliable scorers by year end with 33 points in 40 games including 14 goals. Eyssimont was particularly effective around the net positioning himself for backdoor goals and netted 5 power play goals during the season. He was also outstanding in  big games picking up 5 points in 2 North Star College Cup games and 5 points in the final 3 playoff games of the season. He finished the second half of the season strong compiling 29 points in 24 games.

From LA Insider: Kings Director of Amateur Scouting Mark Yannetti described Eyssimont as ” (having) Skill. Skill, skill, skill, skill, skill, skill. Goal scoring touch, good hockey IQ, skating. Maybe a shade undersized. He’s not quite like Nic Dowd – Nic crossed developmental age as a whole lot younger [Ed: later?], and just standing next to him, you see it. So Mike is a little bit like that, as well. On drafting another SCSU player he commented ” I don’t know if it’s a latent, subconscious thing that we’re drawn to, or if it’s just absolute lightning strike. The other thing, too, and this is more serious, we’ve obviously had success with kids there, and they obviously develop kids there. They’re a winning program. We’re comfortable, and they’re now a preeminent program in college hockey.”

Eyssimont joins former SCSU Huskies Nic Dowd, Kevin Gravel and Jonny Brodzinski in the LA Kings organization.
