Kalle Kossila had a two-point game and the SCSU penalty kill came through in a big way as the Huskies picked up a key 3-1 road win over intra-state rival UMD on Friday at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, MN. Kossila scored the game winning goal and SCSU blanked UMD in six man-advantage opportunities in the conference win. Combined with a North Dakota loss to Omaha, the Huskies have taken over sole possession of first place in the NCHC with a conference record of 10-3-0.
The Huskies took an early lead in the contest on a highlight reel goal by first-year forward Mikey Eyssimont at 7:32 of period one. Eyssimont took a pass from Kossila and carried it over the UMD blue line deking defenseman Willie Raskob and then beating UMD goaltender Kaskisuo top shelf with a backhand shot. UMD knotted the game at 1-1 on a one-timer from the slot by Cal Decowski at 8:20. SCSU outshot the Bulldogs 11 to 10 in period one.
In a penalty-filled second period, SCSU again regained the lead with a power play goal by Kalle Kossila ( Benik / Prow ). Benik fed Kossila between the dots and he beat Kaskisuo for a 2-1 SCSU lead. Six penalties were called in period two – three on each side with SCSU going 1/2 and UMD 0 for three. SCSU outshot UMD 11 to 8 in period two.
The Huskies scored the lone goal of period three at 10:21 with Blake Winiecki’s sixth goal of the year. Winiecki fielded a pass from Jacob Benson and scored off a bad angle shot from the side of the goal. UMD outshot the Huskies 11-4 in period three.
SCSU was 1 for 5 on the man-advantage and UMD was blanked in six attemps on the power play. Charlie Lindgren stopped 28 of 29 shots on goal and UMD’s Kaskisuo turned aside 23 of 26 shots on goal.
The win improved the Huskies overall record to 18-5-0 while the loss dropped UMD’s overall record to 8-8-4. The teams complete their series on Saturday at 7:07 PM at Amsoil Arena.
