Undisciplined play by the University of Minnesota hurt them big time as the #7 SCSU Huskies scored 4 out of 7 times on the power play in their 7-4 rout and sweep of the Gophers at Mariucci Arena on Sunday. SCSU was led by sophomore forward Judd Peterson who scored twice and added an assist for a three-point evening. Kalle Kossila ( 1-2-3) Ethan Prow (0-3-3) Patrick Russell (1-1-2) David Morley (1-1-2) and Blake Winiecki (2-0-2) were also major contributers in yet another show of offense for the Huskies. The win improves the Huskies overall record to 11-3-0 and drops the Gophers to 4-7-0.

The Huskies wasted no time in taking the lead at 8:26 of period one as Kalle Kossila (Russell / Murray) dangled a puck past the Gophers Schierhorn after pouncing on a rebound from a Patrick Russell shot.  The Gophers tied it at 1-1 at 11:18 on a power play goal by Jake Bischoff (Littieri / Bristedt). Bischoff buried a pass from Vinnie Littieri for his second goal of the weekend. However, the Huskies responded before the period ended with another weekend tally by David Morley ( Newell / Benik) for a 2-1 lead. Patrick Newell made a short feed to Morley who made it look easy backhanding the puck high over Schierhorn. The Huskies outshot  the Gophers 8-6 in period one.

The power play continued to click in the second period for the Huskies as Judd Peterson (Benik / Prow)  tipped in a feed through the slot by Joey Benik to extend the SCSU lead to 3-1. This was Peterson’s 8th goal of the season.  A defensive lapse led to the Gophers second goal at 4:28 as Tyler Sheehy (Bristedt / Novak)  was allowed to free-wheel in the Huskies defensive zone and wristed a shot past Lindgren’s glove side.  An ill-timed and blatant hit to the head by Nick Seeler on Niklas Nevalainen at 5:28 gave the Huskies a five-minute power play.  The Huskies got retribution first with a goal by Judd Peterson (Prow / Kossila)  his second of the game at  5:48 as he one-timed a pass from Ethan Prow for a 4-2 lead. Next, at 9:30 Patrick Russell (Prow / Peterson) tipped a  shot by Ethan Prow for a three-goal lead.  The Gophers scored another power play goal at 17:29 as Leon Bristedt ( Cammarata / Sheehy ) buried a goal mouth pass from Cammarata to cut the SCSU lead to 5-3. The Huskies once again outshot the Gophers 12-10 for the period.

After a goaltender interference call to Connor Reilly, Blake Winiecki (Morley / Borgen)  one-timed a pass from David Morley past Nick Lehr to extend the Huskies third period lead to 6-3. But, the Gophers added another at 15:21 with Ryan Norman’s (Romanko / Johnson) first goal of the year.  SCSU finished the scoring with Blake Winiecki’s (Kossila) second goal of the evening into a empty net at 17:23 for a 7-4 final score.  SCSU was outshot 17-6 in period three.

The Huskies were outshot 33-29 for the game  and Charlie Lindgren stopped 29/33 shots on goal. The Gophers tandem of Eric Schierhorn / Nick Lehr combined to stop 19/25 shots on goal. In an evening of abundant man-advantage opportunities, the Huskies were 4/7 on the PP while the Gophers were 2/2.
