SCSU revved its offensive engines once again and exploded for six goals in a 6-1 win over #4 ranked North Dakota at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Saturday, November 21. The win garnered a split of the weekend series and allowed the Huskies to maintain a share of first-place in the NCHC standings. Daniel Tedesco scored the game winning goal and fifteen SCSU players hit the scorecard in the victory.
SCSU took a 1-0 lead at 14:11 of period one on a goal by Patrick Newell (Jackson / Nevalainen). Newell snared a rink-wide pass from Robby Jackson and tossed it towards a streaking David Morley. The puck deflected off UND defenseman Keaton Thompson and into the UND net. Despite getting outshot 8-3 the Huskies carried a one-goal lead into period two.
The first goal of period two by SCSU was a thing of beauty. Attacking the zone wide, Patrick Russell dropped a pass to Nathan Widman who slid a pass to Daniel Tedesco who went airborne deking UND goaltender Hrynkiw on a forehand backhand move. This was Tedesco’s first goal of the season. SCSU extended it’s lead to 3-0 on a goal at 8:46 by David Morley (Newell/Lizotte). Newell skated the puck off the side wall and fed Lizotte who sent it back to Newell who deflected it towards the net where it was tipped in by Morley. However, UND closed the lead to 3-1 with a goal by Troy Stecher at 14:21 who beat Charlie Lindgren clean with a wrist shot in the slot. The Huskies regained a three-goal lead four minutes later on a goal by Niiklas Nevalainen ( Winiecki / Schuldt). Winiecki dropped a pass to Nevalainen who was streaking into the slot and fired it past UND netminder Cam Johnson. SCSU outshot UND 11-5 in period two.
The Huskies added two more goals in the third period. First, Ethan Prow ( Benik/Kossila) scored on a rocket from the blue line at 16:15 on the power play. Grand Forks native, Jacob Benson (Lizotte / Murray), finished the scoring for the Huskies at 19:05 tipping a shot by Grand Forks Red River HS teammate Jon Lizotte for his first career goal as a Husky and a 6-1 final.
SCSU was outshot in the contest 29-21. SCSU’s Lindgren turned aside 28/29 shots on goal while the tandem of Matt Hrynkiw and Cam Johnson stopped 15/21 in a rough night for the UND goaltenders. UND failed on three man-advantage opportunities while SCSU had success on 2/3. SCSU forward Ryan Papa left the game at 3:10 of the second period after getting hit high by UND’s Trevor Olson and did not return to the ice.
