It’s not often you get a laugher in the competitive NCHC. Saturday was the exception as #9 SCSU buried Western Michigan 11-1 at the Lawson Ice Rink in Kalamazoo, MI. Senior Joey Benik had a watermark night scoring 4 goals and adding 2 assists in a freakish show of offense. Teammates David Morley ( 1-4-5) and Patrick Russell (2-1-3) added to the Bronco misery as SCSU placed 45 shots on goal and scored on 4 of 8 man-advantage opportunities.

The Huskies wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Joey Benik lit the lamp at 1:19 of the first period. Benik intercepted a WMU pass just inside the blue line, drove to the net and then fed David Morley who returned the puck to Benik who buried it for his fourth goal of the year. Benik added another at 8:25 on the power play one-timing a cross ice pass from Ethan Prow for a 2-0 SCSU lead. David Morley picked up the second assist on the play. WMU cut the lead to one after a goal by Aaron Hadley who received a pass in the slot and placed it past Charlie Lindgren. But, SCSU responded again at 18:55 with a goal by Patrick Russell, again on the power play. Joey Benik made a backdoor pass to Judd Peterson who fed Russell for a 3-1 SCSU lead. In a lopsided period, SCSU outshot the Broncos 14-2.

The onslaught continued in period two with a goal at 8:02 by David Morley. Patrick Russell fed Morley from behind the net and he wristed it past Collin Olson for a 4-1 SCSU lead. Next, it was Ethan Prow who one-timed a nice pass from Kalle Kossila for the Huskies third power play goal of the game. Joey Benik was awarded the second assist on the goal. Junior Ben Storm scored his 2nd goal of the season at 14:46 ripping a shot from the slot past Olson to increase The SCSU advantage to 6-1. Blake Winiecki picked up the assist. Russell once again closed out the period with his 6th goal of the year with assists to Ben Storm and Blake Winiecki. Storm made a nice cross-ice outlet pass to Russell who drove the net and wristed it past Collin Olson for a 7-1 game. The Huskies outshot WMU 22-11 in another highly dominant period.

SCSU again piled on the goals in the third period despite getting outshot 15-9. First, Joey Benik completed his hat trick with a goal 54 seconds into the third period. David Morley swiped a pass while laying on the ice to Benik who scored his 6th goal of the year. Next it was Ryan Papa who added another goal at 1:19 off a pass from Judd Peterson. This extended the SCSU lead to 9-1. At 5:58 Benik scored his fourth goal of the game with an assist to David Morley. Morley threw the puck towards the front of the net where Benik jumped on a loose puck scoring the Huskies 10th goal of the contest. Blake Winiecki closed out the scoring for the Huskies with a power play goal at 17:34 of the third period. Winiecki received a cross-ice pass from Niklas Nevalainen and wristed it past Lucas Hafner for the 11-1 final.

SCSU outshot the Broncos 45-28 for the game and excelled on the power play converting 50% (4 for 8). Charlie Lindgren and Rasmus Reijola stopped 27 of 28 WMU shots while Lucas Hafner and Collin Olson stopped 34 of 45 SCSU shots on goal.
