The Huskies scored a goal in each period and benefited from another strong performance by Charlie Lindgren as they defeated 7/8 UNO Saturday to sweep the first round NCHC playoff series in Omaha, NE. The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 first period lead on David Morley’s third goal of the weekend and 16th of the season on the power play at 15:59 of period one. The power play followed a check from behind that drove SCSU forward Kalle Kossila head first into the sideboards. Omaha defenseman, Brian Cooper was assessed a five-minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct. The Huskies man-advantage was ineffective until Morley notched his goal with just 36 seconds left on the power play. Ben Storm took a shot from the point and Morley tipped it in for the one goal advantage. Mika Ilvonen was awarded the second assist on the play. SCSU extended it’s lead to 2-0 on a rare goal from Captain Nick Oliver, his third of the season at 11:47 of period two. Joe Rehkamp won a battle behind the net for control of the puck and then steered it to Oliver who directed it past UNO goaltender Kirk Thompson. The Mavericks finally got on the scoreboard in the third period following a tripping call to Ethan Prow. UNO seized the opportunity to send out a second extra attacker and Grant Gallo scored on a goal mouth scramble at 16:44 to narrow the score to 2-1. However, less than a minute later Joey Benik had offensive zone control of the puck, circled the back of the net and scored on a wraparound to put the game out of reach for the Huskies. Jonny Brodzinski and Nathan Widman were credited with assists on Benik’s 14th goal of the season. The Mavericks outshot SCSU 36-28 in the contest with Lindgren turning aside 35/36 SOG while UNO’s Thompson stopped 25/28. Seven penalties were assessed in the game and SCSU was 1/4 while UNO was 1/3. The win moved the Huskies to #13 in the Pairwise and allowed them to advance to the NCHC Tournament at the Target Center in Minneapolis next weekend. Their opponent is undetermined at this time.
