SCSU celebrates their overtime win over Omaha on Friday (photo prout)

David Morley tipped a shot by Joey Benik for the game winner at 9:49 of the second overtime to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the first round of the NCHC playoffs vs Omaha on Friday. This was Morley’s second goal of the game and his 15th of the season. The Huskies took a first period lead on Morley’s 14th goal of the season at 14:02. Some nifty passing from Joey Benik to Niklas Nevalainen to David Morley gave SCSU a 1-0 lead and an advantage that held until 9:43 of the second period. UNO tied the game when Austin Ortega scored a short-handed goal after being left alone in front of the SCSU net while on a Mavericks penalty kill. This was Ortega’s 19th goal of the season. That was the extent of the scoring by either team through regulation play. The Huskies then scored the game winner on Morley’s second goal of the contest with an assist to Joey Benik. A strong forecheck allowed Benik to stop the puck along the sidewall and then shoot it towards the UNO goal where it was tipped by Morley for the GWG. Omaha outshot SCSU 46-39 for the game. SCSU’s Lindgren stopped 45 of 46 shots on goal while the UNO  combination of Ryan Massa and Kirk Thompson stopped 37 of 39 SCSU shots. Thompson relieved Massa in goal in the first period after sustaining what appeared to be a left leg injury.  The Huskies were 0/2 on the man-advantage while the Mavericks were 0/3.  The Huskies remain at #16 in the Pairwise.
Stars of the Game:
#1  David Morley (SCSU)  #2 Charlie Lindgren (SCSU) #3 Kirk Thompson (UNO)
